It's a Choice

There is a special ed teacher at my school who regularly comes in to ask my advice on what to do as far as testing, placement, instruction, etc. with my ELL students. We have had many long heart-to-heart talks about our careers and our positions here in the school and such.
Lately she has been struggling to keep her class under control and to maintain her composure in the school. It seems like every time I see her she is tired, run-down, discouraged, and has nothing but negative things to say about her job, her students, and herself. We've talked about it, and I realized that her situation is a lot like what many of us are dealing with these days- a general feeling of hopelessness and discouragement, bordering on despair. I also realized that I believe that regardless of what our life situation is, we have a few choices: 1)we can leave things the way they are and continue to be miserable by choice... and yes, default is a choice 2) we can leave things the way they are and just choose to accept that our lives are imperfect, seeking comfort in the fact that we are choosing to leave things out of convenience, stability, or what have you 3) we can choose to run away from our problems by quitting our jobs, cutting off contact with our negative relationships, changing our address, etc. 4) or we can choose to confront our problems head on and accept whatever consequences that brings into our life.
The point here is that there is a choice. There is always a choice. We may often feel like we have no choice because we are afraid or unwilling to accept the consequences of certain actions, and that's fine. But we still have a choice... even if our choice is just to accept the present with a better attitude.
What are you going to choose today?

I totally agree. Sometimes the only thing we can choose is how to react to a situation that seems to be out of our control. But we still have a choice.
