I am so bad. I have my seeds organized into packets according to when they need to be started, planted, etc. I have been staring anxiously at my March packet for about a month now, drooling over the goodies that lie within. I am technically (according to my seed starting chart) not supposed to start these little beauties until the 17th, but I caved and planted them 10 days early. Shame on me. Shame.
I couldn't help it, though. So many beautiful little growing things!
I came up with a fantastic and cheap system for starting seeds on windowsills... it's a play on the traditional pony pack idea, but more flexible and uses less space. I bought a pack of disposible bathroom cups (those little kind you're supposed ot use for mouthwash) and punctured the bottoms for drainage. I like them because the individual cells on a standard pony pack are about the same size, but this way I can address my 2 major concerns with home-seed starting: a. I don't have much indoor light and no real place to put my little seeds except for windowsills, which are too narrow to balance pony packs on... trust me. I've tried it... and b. My husband is not really fond of pools of standing water laying around the house such as you get with recently watered pots which didn't drain quite as well as you'd have liked them to. With my little cups, I can just stick the punctured cups stacked inside non-punctured ones to catch the drips. An added bonus is that they are also much less conspicuous than seed trays and pony packs, since they are plain white and somewhat blend into my windowsills. If this works, I will be totally psyched.
