So I was on the phone with Emily yesterday. She called me as an emergency intervention during a party I wished to not be part of, and we ended up talking about my new furniture. She told me it was something I should blog about, so here I am, blogging about my furniture.
One thing you have to understand in order to fully grasp the enormity of the situation is exactly how cheap Luis and I are. We are the single cheapest people that either of us know, which is saying a lot. That also conflicts with our expensive taste. We'll hold off buying something we legitimately need for YEARS until we can afford to by the best. We are so cheap that for the last 5 years of our marriage we have been sleeping on mattresses sitting on box springs sitting on the floor. There was a brief period where I tried to convince Luis that we should stop living like transients and we purchased a bed frame and built a headboard out of lumber from the hardware store, which we spray-painted to match our spray-painted dresser and side tables, but the bed frame was too flimsy and it felt like sleeping on an ocean liner with all of the rocking back and forth, so we ditched that and went back to sleeping on the floor. And no, the furniture did not LOOK spray-painted- it looked awesomely perfectly chocolate brown, because I'm the queen of faux-finishes. Add some funky hardware and they looked vaguely retro and perfectly coordinated- but the headboard banged against the wall every time either of us moved the slightest bit, so the ill-fated headboard was relegated to the garage when we moved... and the bed went back on the floor.
Well, we decided that instead of going on a fancy trip for our 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY (Aug. 19th) we were going to bite the bullet and purchase an actual coordinating bedroom set, spray-paint free! It is a momentous occasion, to say the least. We have actually been shopping for a bedroom set for 5 years now, but being as cheap as we are, it's been an uphill battle. Well, we finally found something at Ikea, which is the greatest store on the earth. I mean seriously- where else can you buy a king sized bed, side tables, 2 dressers and a 6 1/2 foot tall mirror for under $875? It's not their usual cheap square looking mid-century modern stuff, either. It actually looks like real grown-up stuff.
Needless to say, I am thrilled to finally be sleeping off of the floor, and the room looks really nice now. Emily told me I should also add the part about Luis turning interior decorator and picking out our wall art, duvet cover, and "pistachio" throw pillows??? At first it felt really uncomfortable to have my husband take an active interest in duvet covers since it took me exactly 3 months to convince him that I was not making the term up to confuse and trick him- but I've reconciled my uneasy feelings about Luis as interior decorator due to the fact that he actually does have pretty good taste, even if he does want everything to be brown.
Anyway, happy anniversary Luis! 5 years and still going strong. Thanks for being awesome and putting up with my penny pinching! Love you baby!

Way to blog about your furniture! I did expect some pictures you know...
P.S. Your music thingy rocks! I'm really diggin the tunes.
Yay for you! Jake and I used to go looking and lusting at nice bedroom sets, but it got depressing so we stopped. I'm with Em, though. I'm wondering where the pictures are. I mean, how am supposed to be properly envious without photos? ;)
Dude, you're way faster than us! We'd been married almost 9 years before we got a real live bedroom set. And we only got that because my mom bought it for us. Ikea didn't have as much great bedroom stuff then, so we went with unfinished, and Kev spent hours and hours staining it all.
Also, thank you so much for reminding me I don't live by an Ikea anymore. I loves me the Ikea.
Also also, pictures! Where are the pictures?!?
