So Luis just walked in to my office and sat down and said "what is THAT you're listening to?" The "that" in question was a Spanish-language version of the Primary songs CD. I explained that to him and he said that he had been confused because it was much more vanilla than the usual tasty rock-n-roll licks I listen to.
Gauntlet issued. Do NOT question my rock-n-roll street cred. I mean c'mon. I knew the lyrics to the ENTIRE album of Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club band by the time I was 13... and I memorized them while listening to VINYL! Boom. Yeah. I said it. I can tell you the original bass player for Cream, the city where Janice Joplin grew up in Texas, and I can actually tell you which of the members of "Sly and the family Stone" were really family. I have clocked COUNTLESS hours watching VH1's "Behind the Music," and even more time wasted just sitting around doing *nothing* but listening to good ol' rock. I was the first person I knew who owned Metallica's Symphonic album. I actually get the joke behind Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker." I plan on naming my firstborn daughter Roxanne, Michelle, or Lola (after the Kinks, not Manilow)....
I could keep going, but let's just sum this up- the ONLY truly long-term significant relationship I have in my life is with Rock. Rock and I were a firmly established item by the time I met my husband, and if anything ever happens to him, I'm sure that Rock and I will still be going strong. Rock has seen me through the good times and bad, and no matter how many other genres of music I may dally in, my heart is secretly dressed in denim and leather and tatooed with a thorny rose, smiling skeleton, tye-dyed terrapin, and the words "I Heart Rock!"
So I dropped a truth bomb on him, and that bomb was the Stones' "Gimme Shelter." He countered with "Let's Get Together" by the Youngbloods. So I came back at him with "Dazed and Confused." His response was "Low Rider," which I felt was a formidable blow, but I was ready. I attacked with "Layla," acoustic version. Game, set, match.
So for all of you out there who think you are up to the challenge I say do you feel lucky? Well do ya?
P.S. I really do love church hymns and stuff, especially when interpreted with a highly skilled and passionate delivery.
