I teach Middle School ESL/English. It is often a thankless job. I have hours upon hours of work I do after school and on weekends every week that I don't even get paid for. I have to deal with ridiculous and unpredictable administration (not always, and never intentionally, but still regularly), racist and unforgiving colleagues (although obviously not all of them, the ones that are make me crazy), and helicopter parents ('nuff said). I have at least 2 planning meetings every week, usually during my prep time (which is the only time I have every day to grade papers and prepare lessons), which is why I have to stay late and work weekends.
Literally the only reasons I do it are because I genuinely, deeply, love my students and I am passionate about public education and its role in a democracy. Well, that and because of the paid summer vacation- I ain't gonna lie.
Every day I have my students write a reflective journal for the last 5 minutes of class. Sometimes they write about what they learned during the day. Sometimes they reflect on issues affecting the school/community/country/world, sometimes they just write about themselves. Today's topic was free choice. 5 minutes to write about anything you want.
Here is what Raul wrote: Today Mrs. Faris is good teacher. I have two classes with her. Her classes are fun. It is never boring. Her activities are the best.
This pleases me because a) it's nice when I get props from the kids since they are usually the only ones who thank me for my hard work b) I'm glad to know that the general perception of my class is that it doesn't suck and c) he used correct capitalization, punctuation, and varied his sentence lengths.
All in all, it made my day.

I'm glad you recognize how wonderful it is to have a job - actually earning money - that is also fulfilling! The more yrs. I put in at my job the more I wish I would have been able to at least try teaching - 'cause I bet I would have found it much more fulfilling than secretary-ing at a law office. I'm happy for you darling one! XOXOXMA
Reason why I like you:
a) you are cool
2) you are a good teacher
III) we share the same brain
d) you're pretty
I like Emily's reasons the best. Plus correct grammar sure makes it easier to read the nice compliments!!
