Phase I complete

So I'm moving ahead with the samples for my baby gear. Today I tried out the technique I'm going to use to fuse together the plastic bags that I'm using for lining. This is a photo of the finished product. It's pretty stiff and about the thickness of medium to heavy weight fusible liner. It's pretty much the exact weight, stiffness and thickness that I need to make awesome changing pads, wet bags, diaper totes, and bibs. SWEET!
The process sounded simple enough, but I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to pull it off with the equipment that I have left over from the store. Since that was my biggest concern as far as production goes, I'm pretty much good to go. Next step is finding some cool fabrics to use. I got a great pattern for a diaper tote online, so tomorrow after class I'm going to give it a shot. I have about a million yards of muslin left over from the dress shop which I'm planning on using for lining for the bag. I think I have some cuter stuff I can use for the exterior shell of the bag and for the decorative pockets. The pattern I have is awesomely flexible as far as pockets and stuff goes, so here's a question for you moms-
What kind of pockets did you need/want on your diaper bags? I know that they usually come with a few pouches inside to hold bottles and wipes. I've seen them with cell phone pouches before and zippered pockets. Is that kind of stuff necessary? Adjustable straps or solid straps? If you could design the perfect diaper bag, what features would it have? I never had any gear to use with Andrei because his mom wasn't really into the whole baby accessories thing and it seemed kind of pointless to buy a diaper tote to use just on the weekends, so we just went with an old backpack.
Thanks for your input!

One feature I think is really cool for a diaper bag is to have a fold out changing pad included whether it's attached or removable. Contents of my diaper bag (if I was using one): diapers (4-5), portable wipes container, blanket/nursing cover, spit up rags, small toys, pacifier. As they grow you could drop some of the baby stuff and put in things like sippy cups and snack containers. Good luck! Sounds like a super cool adventure.

Okay, I consider myself rather an expert on diaper bags, seeing as I have been using one kind or another for over 3 and half years with no end in sight. here are my thoughts for you to glean what you will:

*I like having pockets for my stuff, too. I don't know many moms out there who llike having to worry about a purse of their own in addition to the baby (or two or three) and the diaper bag. I have a small purse to carry my essentials on those rare occassions when I DON'T have kids with me. But most of the time, I keep my wallet, phone, keys, and any other personal items in the diaper bag. I hate having a bag with no seperate place to put my things. I don't like bags with no pockets and no dividers and everything gets all mixed in together.

*Along the lines of pockets and dividers, something possibly to consider are moms with more than one child. I recently bought a large laptop bag to use as my new diaper bag because I now have three kids to cart things around for, plus my stuff. I need somewhere to keep baby things (bottles, pacifiers, diapers and wipes, change of clothes, burp cloths, nursing cover, plastic bags, and perhaps a blankie of some sort) as well as stuff for the older two (more diapers, a pullup or change of panties for Molly just in case, snacks, drinks, and books or toys depending on where we're going and how long we'll be there).

*I, too, like having some sort of changing pad to use when I can. However, with so much stuff and so little space that is often more of a luxury than I can afford. But when I just had one baby to worry about, it was more of an essential. What can I say, I guess I just don't worry about stuff as much with so many little ones to worry about.

*As my babies get older, I like having a smaller bag to use as well. Once bottles, burp cloths, nursing covers, changes of clothes, etc aren't needed anymore I like to have a bag for short trips that is more compact but still fits a couple of diapers, some wipes, a couple small snacks, a sippy cup (or two or three) and my things (wallet, phone, and keys).

I am not re-reading or editing this comment (or novella, rather), so I am sorry if it's incoherent or rambly. Best of luck in your lastest endeavor. Feel free to pick my brain further if necessary. (It doesn't function well anymore, but childcare is something I am rather versed in.) Love you!

Just thought of some other stuff often found in my diaper bag. Diaper cream (Butt Paste being my fave) and a bottle or two of medicine (Tylenol and gas drops or whatever Rx they're on at the moment). Also, I usually carry a small bottle for me of drugs: tylenol, advil, tums, etc.

I had a land's end bag for awhile (it was stolen) and my favorite feature that it had was a special keychain/elastic for my keys. It's hard to describe... Basically the keychain had a plastic part that would lock into another plastic part that was connected by a curly elastic to the diaper bag. It stretched out pretty long so I could use the key to unlock the door while still attached. It also detached easily for driving. There was a pocket just for keys on the outside of the bag and I didn't have to worry about them falling out and getting lost or digging for them forever in the bottom of the bag around all of my diaper stuff.

Diaper bags are not one size fits all. You need different bags for different situations or stages.
Baby stage- room for lots of stuff, diapers, wipes, formula/breastmilk/bottles (though if breastfeeding not so much, desitin, nursing cover, water bottle for mom, changing pad, eventually toys and rattles.

toddler stage- fewer diapers are needed and more toys- lol. At this stage a smaller diaper bag is nice- one that looks more like a purse but still has a water bottle pocket and a sippy cup pocket.

One for the car is nice for emergencies. and then you can just carry the smaller one with you.

I like my diaper bag and purse straps long- messenger bag style so that it doesn't take up an arm. I need both arms totally free to handle kids.

Good luck!

I'm always wanting for sure 2 spots for drinks. One for a sippy cup and one for my water bottle. I'm all about seperate pockets for snacks, one for diapers/wipes, one for toys, one for meds, one for my stuff etc. That way I stay organized and can find what I need when I need it. I like the bag to look neat and have plenty of room, yet I don't want a mary poppins bag where I can't pull anything out because it's too deep. good luck!
